Title: Construction Morphology: Implications, opportunities, consequences
About the speaker: Jenny Audring is an Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Leiden. Her research interests include morphology and the mental lexicon, linguistic complexity, and the learnability of grammatical gender.
Abstract
Construction Morphology is not just Construction Grammar applied to morphology. Morphological data comes with its own challenges and places specific demands on the theory. Morphologists have critically reflected on the assumptions and tools of constructionist modeling and have proposed innovative solutions. In this talk, I will outline the contributions that a constructionist approach to morphology makes to constructionist thinking more broadly.
I will focus on three key issues:
Relationality: the links within and among morphological constructions;
Productivity, particularly limited productivity;
Paradigmaticity, or the role of ‘horizontal’ relations between complex words and between morphological schemas.
The talk draws on two construction-based approaches to morphology, Construction Morphology (Booij 2010) and Relational Morphology (Jackendoff & Audring 2020). By reviewing a selection of relevant data and theoretical solutions, I aim to show that the regularities and idiosyncrasies in the grammar of words are instructive for the larger theoretical framework.
